Texas World War II Monument
The Victory in Europe, Victory in Japan Day Monument honors all Texan World War II veterans. It was dedicated on Veterans Day 2005, by Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst. The monument is carved from Ebony Mist granite and features a timeline of significant events from the war, as well as two bronze plaques depicting Allied victories in Europe and the Pacific.
At the same ceremony, a group of Baylor University alumni dedicated a cenotaph to Jack Lummus, a Medal of Honor recipient and Baylor University and New York Giants football player who died at the Battle of Iwo Jima. A cenotaph is a headstone or marker erected to honor someone buried elsewhere or whose final resting place is unknown. Cenotaphs for several Texan Medal of Honor recipients have since been placed in the area.
