The Texas Medal of Honor Monument was unveiled at the Cemetery on May 31, 1999,  and serves to memorialize the eighty-three men who were either born in Texas, entered military service in Texas, or engaged in action in Texas and received the Medal of Honor.  All then-living Texas Medal of Honor recipients were invited to the ceremony and many attended.

One recipient, James Marion Logan, was given plots in the Cemetery by then-Governor George W. Bush that day, starting the tradition of honoring Texas Medal of Honor recipients with burial at the Texas State Cemetery. Today, the plots around the monument are reserved solely for Medal recipients and their spouses.

After the unveiling, the Medal of Honor section became a focal point for ceremonies and other monuments honoring the United States military and the Texans who have served.
