The September 11, 2001 Monument at the Texas State Cemetery features two steel columns from the World Trade Center Ground Zero site in New York.
The September 11, 2001 Monument at the Texas State Cemetery was commissioned in 2002 by Governor Rick Perry to mark the terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, as well as the subsequent military campaign, “Operation Enduring Freedom.” Numerous designs were submitted by artists, architects and private citizens from around the state.
The final design by O’Connell, Robertson and Associates of Austin was selected by the Governor’s Office and the Texas State Cemetery Committee. It was unveiled on September 11, 2003, and incorporates two steel columns from the World Trade Center site and a timeline of significant events from that unforgettable day.
