MATTHIAS, WILLIAM PORTER (1845~1929) William Porter Matthias, Confederate Veteran, was born in Florida in 1845. During the Civil War, Matthias enlisted on April 3, 1863, and fought in Company K of the 6th Florida Infantry in Finley's Brigade of the Army of Tennessee. He fought until May of 1865.

In 1872, Matthias immigrated to Texas, where he worked as a farmer. He lived in Ragley, Panola County, where he began receiving a Confederate Pension. In his pension application, Matthias claimed his physical condition as very bad and was preventing him from working. During the war, he was hospitalized on February 24, 1864. No other records are available concerning his service, so no known ailment is listed.

Between 1908, when he was approved for a pension, and 1921, when he came to Austin, Matthias moved to Houston. From there, on May 11, 1921, he was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin, still complaining of his previous disabilities. After living in the Home for nine years, Matthias died on June 7, 1929. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the next day. Only two women, Mrs. E. J. Stanley and Callie May Warren, were listed as next-of-kin.
