CRAWFORD, THOMAS C. (1839 ~ 1918). Thomas C. Crawford, Confederate veteran, was born in Virginia in 1839. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Crawford enlisted in the Confederacy on May 14, 1861, in Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia and was mustered into service as a private in 2nd Company D, 1st Regiment Virginia Cavalry, (also known as Captain W. E. Jones' Company) Washington Mounted Rifles and Company L, 1st Regiment Virginia Cavalry.

After fighting with the 1st Virginia Cavalry for nearly three years, Crawford transferred to Company C of the 36th Virginia Volunteers on March 10, 1863. He presumably finished out the War with the 36th Volunteers.

In 1869, Crawford moved to Tyler, Smith County, Texas, where he worked as a carpenter. Complaining of old age and now a widower, Crawford moved to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin on October 9, 1917. After residing in the Home for less than a year, he died on October 6, 1918, and was buried in the Texas State Cemetery shortly thereafter.
