LONG, STUART MORRISSON (1913 ~ 1977). Stuart Morrisson Long was born on November 15, 1913 in Portales, New Mexico. He developed an interest in journalism while working on his school newspaper in Abilene, Texas.

After studying journalism at Abilene Christian College, Hardin-Simmons University, and the University of Texas, he married Emma P. Jackson. Long served as a sergeant in the Marine Corps during World War II.

After returning to Austin, he established the Long News Service, which became the Capitol's largest press bureau serving newspapers nationwide. Long served as the founder and operator of Long News Service for forty years before retirement.

In addition to running the news service, Long was the correspondent for the Texas State Radio Network, wrote for the New York Times and Newsweek, and co-authored with Sam Kinch a book entitled "Pied Piper of Texas Politics," about former Governor Allan Shivers. Long died on February 3, 1977 in Austin, Texas and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.
