Scott Philen Sayers, Jr.
SAYERS, SCOTT PHILEN (1952~ ) Scott Philen Sayers Jr., second Chairman of the Texas State Cemetery Committee, was born May 11, 1952, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Scott Philen Sayers, Sr., a two term member of the Texas House of Representatives, and Nancy De Graffenried. After moving to Austin in 1963, when his father went to work for Governor John Connally, Sayers attended Stephen F. Austin High School, where he graduated in 1970, and the University of Texas, where he received his Bachelor of Journalism degree from the School of Communications in 1974.
Upon graduation, he was a licensed real estate broker in Dallas, Texas, before he and his wife, Julie, purchased the Texas State Directory Press, publishers of numerous Texas government reference books, in 1979. In 1984, he was asked by longtime friend, professional golfer Ben Crenshaw, to become his agent and business manager, and since that time the two have been associated. Sayers also handles other clients in sports and broadcasting in his role as a sports agent/advisor.
Chairman Sayers currently serves on the board of Crenshaw Golf Properties and Coore & Crenshaw (golf course architects) and is co-executive director of the Stephen F. Austin High School Alumni Assn. (43, 000+ graduates since 1881). He previously served on the board of The West Austin Youth Assn. (1996-2003) and was president of WAYA in 2002. He served on the Lake Austin Advisory Panel from 1999-2002, was a co-chair of the Lifetime Sports Committee of the Austin Independent School District Task Force for Athletic Improvements and served on the original advisory board of Texas Capitol Bank. Sayers was a co-founder of the Stephen F. Austin Society to benefit extra circular activities at Austin High School. He is a board member of The Friends of the Texas State Cemetery and a former member of the Friends of the Governors Mansion.
Chairman Sayers was appointed to the Texas State Cemetery Committee in 2003 by Governor Rick Perry and was reappointed to a second term in 2009, his term will expire in 2015.
