Mary Elizabeth Childs Copeland

COPELAND, MARY ELIZABETH CHILDS (1860~1956) Mary Elizabeth Childs Copeland, wife of Confederate veteran Daniel Copeland, was born in Ellmore County, Alabama on May 17, 1860. Her father's name was James Childs and her mother's name is not known.

After immigrating to Texas, Mary married Daniel Copeland on November 27, 1880, in Washington County. From there they moved to Milam County, where, on January 31, 1908, Dan died. Soon after, Mary moved to Orange County and applied to receive Dan's Confederate Pension, but was turned down.

In 1913, Mary moved to Marietta, Cass County, and again applied for Dan's Confederate Pension. This time she was successful. In 1947, Mary moved once again. This time she went to in Talpa, Coleman Coutny.

After living in Talpa for less than a year, Mary moved to Austin to live in the Confederate Woman's Home. She entered the Home on March 9, 1948, and remained there until her death on May 6, 1956. She was several days short of ther 96th birthday.
