Mary Caroline Radcliffe Howerton

HOWERTON, MARY CAROLINE RADCLIFFE (1844~1921) Mary Caroline Radcliffe Howerton, Confederate widow, was born in South Carolina on September 14, 1844, to Warren Radcliffe and Mary Smith, both of South Carolina.

Mrs. Howerton lived in the Confederate Woman's Home in Austin until she was moved to the Austin Lunatic Asylum, now called the Austin State Hospital, on September 14, 1920. After living in the Asylum for six months, Mrs. Howerton died on March 19, 1921. Her body was returned to the Confederate Women's Home and she was buried in the Texas State Cemetery that same day.
