MCCURDY, MARQUIS LAFAYETTE (1842 ~ 1939). Marquis Lafayette McCurdy was born in Florida in 1842. During the Civil War, McCurdy served in Company K of the 3rd Arkansas Infantry of Hood's Brigade in the Virginia Army.

The Third Arkansas served in the famous Texas Brigade of the Army of Northern Virginia and saw major action during the Civil War. The Third was present at Sharpsburg, Gettysburg and the Wilderness where they suffered major casualties. The Third Arkansas was present at Appomattox Courthouse where General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union forces.

In 1865, McCurdy moved to Texas and settled in the small central Texas town of West. He worked on the railroad and was a Methodist. No longer able to care for himself, McCurdy was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin, Texas on September 15, 1927.

He was discharged from the Home on July 8, 1931, but was readmitted once again. McCurdy died at the Confederate Men's Home on May 16, 1939 and was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the next day. McCurdy is thought to have been the last known survivor of Hood's Texas Brigade.
