Lewis C. Irwin

IRWIN, LEWIS C. (1828~1889) Lewis C. Irwin was born April 11, 1828 in Wisconsin to Robert Irwin and Hannah Rees. Irwin worked as a clerk in the United States Indian Agent office.

During the Civil War, Irwin was a member of the Confederate States Navy and served under Commodore Leon Smith, commander Marine Department of Texas. Commodore Smith was an integral part of the Confederacy’s recapture of Galveston Bay in 1863 and the Battle of Sabine Pass in September 1863.

Following the War, Irwin moved to New Mexico and was eventually admitted to the Confederate Men’s Home on March 14, 1888. Lewis C. Irwin died on December 23, 1889 and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.
