SMITH, KATHERINE ELIZABETH HILL GOODWIN (1921 ~ 2008). The following is an obituary for Katherine Smith, spouse of Stanford Smith, former member of the Texas House of Representatives.
Lifelong Texas resident Katherine Elisabeth Hill Goodwin Smith died in Austin on March 25, 2008, at the age of 87. She was born in De Leon, Texas, on January 18, 1921, to Sherman and Elizabeth (Gibson) Hill, and attended school in Lamesa and Brownwood.
A committed Democrat and an enthusiastic Longhorn fan, she was a graduate of the University of Texas and attended law school at the University of Houston. She retired in 1992 from the Texas State Auditor's Office, and found great enjoyment in cooking, tennis, painting, and well-treated cats.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Bill Goodwin, in 1955, and by her second husband, Stanford S. Smith, in 2004. She is survived by her son, Stephen Goodwin of Austin; her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and David Luft of Fairfax, VA; her grandson, Benjamin Luft of Austin; and her nieces, Jan Bennett and Virginia LaScelle, and their families.
They will remember her for her bravery, perseverance, passion for justice, history, and fashion, and unwavering support of the persons she loved and the causes she embraced. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date, followed by the interment of her ashes in the Texas State Cemetery.
