ABALOS, JUAN (1835 ~ 1930). Juan Abalos, Confederate veteran, was born in Texas, circa 1835. During the Civil War, he served in the 2nd Regiment, Texas Light Artillery Arizona Brigade Company B, known as J.R. Baylor's Brigade. It is likely that Abalos served during the capture of Mesilla, New Mexico. At Mesilla, Baylor led 300 men from Fort Bliss up the Rio Grande to capture Fort Filmore from Federal forces; Baylor declared the Arizona Territory for the Confederacy and appointed himself military governor in the new capital of Mesilla.

Juan Abalos was a Catholic, and resided in Austin for the last 62 years of his life. He had a daughter, Mary, and made his living as a laborer until illness rendered him unable to work. He was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home on October 22, 1929. He died there on February 23, 1930, and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.
