John M. McWilliams

MCWILLIAMS, JOHN (1841 ~ 1919). John McWilliams, Confederate veteran, was born in Alexandria, Rapides Parish, Louisiana to James McWilliams and Marguerite Adeline Huffman in 1841. He was one of nine children.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, McWilliams joined the Confederacy, but his regiment is not known, other than his company and partial regiment name - Company C, 2nd Louisiana.

McWilliams moved to Texas in 1868, but his obituary from the Texarkana Gazette said he moved to Texarkana in 1881. McWilliams moved into the Confederate Men's Home in Austin on October 18, 1914. After living in the Home for five years, he passed away on March 21, 1919. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery three days later.

No information is known about Mr. McWilliams' family. His wife, whose name is not known, passed away before he moved to Austin and he appears to have had two sons, J. E. and John McWilliams, Jr., who lived in Bonham and Texarkana, respectively.

Information taken from Confederate Home Roster and Death Certificate #11587.
