John Henry Noe

NOE, JOHN HENRY (1832 ~ 1911). Confederate veteran John Henry Noe was born January 28, 1832 in Kentucky.

Noe was mustered in the Confederate Army August 8, 1862. A short time later, he was assigned to Company B, 2nd Kentucky's Mounted Rifles, under the command of General John Hunt Morgan (Morgan's Raiders). In the summer of 1863, Morgan began his famous "Great Raid" into Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio.

Pursued by Federal troops, Morgan was surrounded at Buffington's Island and surrendered. Col. Adam Rankin "Stovepipe" Johnson (buried in the Texas State Cemetery) escaped across the Ohio River into Virginia with less than 400 of Morgan's men. Noe became a member of Company G, First Virginia Cavalry (originated November, 1863) and was with or near the command of General Robert E. Lee when he surrendered to General U.S. Grant at Appomattox.

Noe married Mary Jane Shannon on March 12, 1873 in Pike County, Indiana. Together, they moved to Goliad County, Texas in 1874. They also lived in Lampasas, Williamson, Travis and Tom Green Counties. John Noe died at the age of 78 on January 10, 1911, in San Angelo, Texas and is buried in an unmarked pauper's grave at Fairmount Cemetery.

John Henry Noe's great grandson has requested that a cenotaph be made in his honor for his service to the Confederate States of America, to be placed at the Texas State Cemetery.
