ROE, JOHN F. (1841 ~ 1908). Confederate veteran John F. Roe was born in Georgia in 1841. He moved to Texas when he was 17 and settled in Bastrop County.

He enlisted in the Confederate Army on August 30, 1862, in Captain Jerry C. Wilkins' Company, Madison's Battalion of the Mounted Partisan Rangers. After being mustered into Confederate service on October 6, 1862, the Rangers became Company D, Baylor's Regiment of the Texas Cavalry, which was also known as the 2nd Regiment of the Arizona Brigade.

After the War, Roe returned to Bastrop County and settled in Smithville, where he worked as a farmer. He was married (his wife's name is unknown) and he had at least one child, a daughter, Lizzie Roe, who also lived in Smithville.

Roe entered the Confederate Men's Home on April 20, 1908, and died the same year on August 31. He was buried at the Texas State Cemetery the same day he died.
