AKKARD, JOHN (1834~1902) John Akkard served as a private in the Confederate Army for less than five months. He enlisted August 20, 1861 in Tallahassee, Florida, and was discharged due to illness January 17, 1862. He was part of Company M,(some records say Company G) of the 2nd Florida Infantry. It is unlikely that he participated in any battles while he was in service.

Some of Akkards records say he was born in Ohio, others say Madison County, Alabama. His last name is also spelled Akard in some records. According to his discharge record he was 5'11'', had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and light brown hair. He listed his occupation as a stage driver.

Akkard came to Texas in 1868 and lived in Galveston. According the Confederate Home Roster he was a laborer and was not married. Akkard was admitted to the Confederate Mens Home July 20, 1900. He died October 23, 1902 and was buried in the Texas State Cemetery.
