BRUCE, JAMES L. (1830-1914) ~ James L. Bruce was born in Virginia on November 25, 1830. When the Civil War began, Bruce was residing in Missouri. From there, he enlisted in Maupin's Company, 6th Missouri Infantry under General Clark. Bruce would eventually transfer into the artillery of Bledsoe's battery. James Bruce fought in many engagements and skirmishes but was never wounded or taken prisoner. After the war, Bruce went back to Missouri, where he lived with his wife, Bettie until 1873, when they moved to Texas. In 1899, Bruce lived in Hardwood, TX in Caldwell County as a widower. On February 20, 1902, Bruce was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin, TX, where he died on March 26, 1914. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the following day.
