After immigrating to the United States, he served in Company C, 14th Louisiana Regiment, and Company C, 23rd Virginia Cavalry, during the Civil War. The 23rd Virginia Cavalry was formed when the 41st Cavalry Battalion, two companies of O'Ferrall's Cavalry and one independent unit consolidated in April 1864. The 23rd participated in minor battles most notably the Lynchburg Campaign.
