YOUNG, JAMES D. (1843-1896) ~ James D. Young, Confederate Veteran, was born in 1843, in Arkansas. At the age of five, he and his family moved to Texas, where he grew up and then worked as a speculator.

On April 3, 1862, when Young was nineteen years old, he mustered into Company F of the 31st Texas Cavalry of Hawpe's Regiment in Austin, Texas. This regiment assembled at Waco, Texas and served in Arkansas, Missouri, and the Indian Territory before dismounting at the end of 1862. Ordered to the east of the Mississippi River, the unit remounted and was assigned to Gano's and J.E. Harrison's Brigade. Under this leadership, the unit fought at Poison Spring and Cabin Creek.

It is assumed that Young returned to Texas where he continued working. On April 30, 1892, Young was admitted to the Confederate Mens Home in Austin, Texas. He then was dismissed at a later date and then returned January 7, 1893. He died three years later on November 27, 1896, and is buried in the Texas State Cemetery.
