PARKER, HUGH M. (1839 ~ 1924). Hugh M. Parker, Confederate Veteran, was born December 29, 1839. He moved to Texas in 1854, where he worked as a wagoner.

In 1861, Parker was mustered into Co. I, 5th Texas Infantry, under Hood's Brigade in Whitting's Division. The 5th Texas Infantry was assembled in Richmond, Virginia, in October of 1861. They participated in the campaigns at Seven Pines and Cold Harbor. They also participated in the battles at Suffolk, Chickamauga, Knoxville, Petersburg, skirmishes around Appomattox and Gettysburg. At Gettysburg, the infantry surrendered 12 officers and 149 men.

At the close of the war, Company I surrendered at Quincy, Florida, on May 11, 1865. After being held as a Prisoner of War for thirteen days, Parker was paroled on May 24, 1865, and presumably returned to Texas.

In 1888, Parker moved from Richmond, Texas to Austin, Texas. On May 25, 1898, he was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home. Suffering from blindness and wounds received in the war, Parker stayed there until his death on February 9, 1924. He was buried in the State Cemetery the following day.
