CLAIBORNE, HOLBERT TALMAGE (1842 ~ 1921). Confederate veteran Holbert Talmage Claiborne was born in Monroe County, Tennessee in 1842, and worked as a farm laborer until the age of 19.

On April 18, 1861, Claiborne enlisted in the Confederate Army and was enrolled in Company F, 3rd Regiment Tennessee Infantry (J.C. Vaughan's Brigade). He served in the Confederate Army until the end of the war, although he was reported absent without leave in Franklin, North Carolina during his service.

The 3rd Tennessee was organized May 29, 1861 at Knoxville and served throughout the war in the Tennessee and North Carolina area. Also called the 3rd Confederate Infantry, it served at the first Battle of Bull Run and served as part of an escort to Jefferson Davis until surrendering at Washington, Georgia. Claiborne served in the 3rd Infantry "until Lee surrendered at Appomattox" according to pension records.

Claiborne moved to Texas in 1879 and settled in Bastrop County. He lived in Smithville until the age of 68 when he applied for entrance into the Confederate Men's Home in Austin. He was admitted to the Home because of a kidney ailment on February 22, 1911.

Claiborne died at 4:30 p.m. on September 13, 1921, and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.
