Gloria Martinez Chavez

CHAVEZ, GLORIA MARTINEZ (1938 - 2025). The following is an obituary for Gloria Martinez Chavez, spouse of former Texas House Member Melchor Chavez. The obituary was provided by Trinity Funeral Chapel of Harlingen.

Gloria Martinez Chavez, age 87, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, at her beloved home in Harlingen, Texas, surrounded by her devoted family and dearest friends. Born and raised in San Marcos, Texas, she was the cherished daughter of the late Rosa Guerrero Martinez, and granddaughter of Guadalupe (Lupe) and Gertrudis Guerrero Martinez. From an early age, Gloria radiated warmth and compassion, qualities that defined her life and legacy.

Gloria’s steadfast faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of her life. She professed her faith as a young girl and remained a lifelong member of the Second Presbyterian Church—first in San Marcos, and later in Harlingen, where she continued to serve and worship with devotion.

As a young woman, Gloria moved to Austin with excitement and curiosity about what her future might hold. There, she met the love of her life, Melchor Chavez of Harlingen, a student at the University of Texas School of Law. They got married on October 27, 1963. After Melchor’s graduation, Gloria left Austin reluctantly, and soon found her true home in Harlingen, where Melchor began his legal career and where she would build a rich and meaningful life over the next six decades.

In Harlingen, Gloria embraced motherhood and community with open arms. She retired from the Texas Department of Human Services to care full-time for her children, Annette and Carlos. A vibrant and engaged member of the community, Gloria was involved in many civic and charitable organizations, including the HOSTS program (Helping One Student to Succeed), the PTA, the Harlingen Library Board, the Jaycee-Etts, the Cameron County Bar Auxiliary, Theta Omega Sorority, and she served proudly as a Presiding Precinct Judge in numerous elections.

When her husband entered public service, Gloria enthusiastically took on the role of campaign confidante and political partner. Her sincere warmth, generous spirit, and genuine interest in others made her a beloved figure throughout the community—and a secret weapon in every campaign. Her natural grace and tireless support were instrumental in Melchor’s political life, but even more so in the lives of all who knew her.

Gloria was a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother, wife, and friend. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone around her feel seen, valued, and loved. Whether through a visit, a thoughtful phone call, or a lovingly prepared meal, Gloria’s kindness was expressed in both grand gestures and the quiet, consistent acts of love that shaped the lives of so many. She was the first to show up in times of joy and in seasons of sorrow, offering both strength and solace.

When she wasn’t caring for others, Gloria pursued her two great passions: shopping and travel. She found joy in finding thoughtful gifts for family and friends, and even greater joy in discovering new cultures and histories. With Melchor and her loved ones, she traveled to historic sites across Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, Mexico, and the Far East—leaving a trail of memories and laughter in every place she visited.

Gloria was preceded in death by her mother, Rosa Guerrero Martínez; her grandparents, Guadalupe (Lupe) and Gertrudis Guerrero Martinez; her aunt Josephine G. Gonzalez; and her uncle Joe Martinez. She is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Judge Melchor Chavez; her daughter Annette Chavez Alvarado and son-in-law Michael; her son Carlos Eduardo Chavez; and her treasured granddaughter, Melora Chavez Alvarado. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and cherished friends who will carry her memory in their hearts forever.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, August 1, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Saturday, August 2, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Funeral Home. A service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church in Harlingen, Texas. Interment will take place on Tuesday, August 5, at 11:00 a.m. at the Texas State Cemetery, 909 Navasota Street, Austin, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, San Antonio & South Texas Chapter, 1100 NW Loop 410, Suite 302, San Antonio, TX 78213.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Gloria’s loving caregiver, MariChuey Peralta, and the dedicated staff at Bristol Hospice for their tender and compassionate care throughout Gloria’s journey with Alzheimer’s.  We also like to thank her friends and family who visited and supported her:  Mrs. Lupe Limon, Sylvia Rodriguez, Estella Elizondo, Maria Trevino, Sefie Longoria, Gloria Casas, and Norma Menchaca.

Honored to serve as pallbearers in Harlingen: Michael Alvarado, Everardo Casas Jr., Melchor Casas, Javier Casas, Carlos Chavez, and Marty Rodriguez; pallbearers in Austin: Bernie Chavez, Manuel Chavez, Jeff Folger, Roland Limon, Jorge Trevino and Victor Reyna.

To know Gloria was to experience grace, generosity, and the true beauty of a life lived in love and service. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
