STEPHENS, G.W. (1840 ~ 1927) The following information was provided by the great-great granddaughter, Ann Erdman. George Wesley Stephens was born in Monroe County Tennessee to Wesley Stephens and Emily Ann Yoakum Stephens. He and his brother Benjamin were orphaned and moved to Texas with their uncle. Stephens entered the Confederate Army on April 27, 1862, as a private at Camp Lubbock. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant and assumed command of Company C, 11th Texas Infantry, June 23, 1862. Witnesses for his pension stated they fought with him on the boggy bayou in Louisiana on the 3rd day of November 1863. George Stephens married Mary Catherine Sarver Olinger, widow of Pearis Olinger, on November 11, 1864, in Grayson County Texas. The couple had three children, Martha Olivia, William F., and James W. Mary Stephens died in 1874. Stephens then married Fannie Edsall. Stephens and his sons, William and James and son-in-law Rufus Rowland Cobb participated in the Oklahoma territory land run in April 1892. On May 1, 1913, George Stephens was admitted to the Confederate Men’s Home in Austin, Texas. He died on March 11, 1927, was buried at the Texas State Cemetery on March 13, 1927.
