Frances Hall Smith

SMITH, FRANCES (1841 ~ 1936). Confederate widow Frances Smith was born on November 15, 1841, in Baldwin County, Alabama to Joseph Hall of Alabama and Harriett Brown of Pennsylvania.

She married John D. Smith who served in Mississippi Company G, 22nd Mississippi Infantry, also known as the Black Hawk Rifles during the Civil War. The unit was organized at Black Hawk, Carroll County, Mississippi. The unit was present at many battles including Shiloh. He was discharged after the War in April 1865.

Frances and John D. Smith were married on August 3, 1869 in Falls County, Texas. The two had no children. At some point the couple moved to Reeves County in West Texas where John Smith died on July 11, 1906. Frances Smith moved to San Marcos, Hays County, Texas in 1921 and applied for her husband's Confederate pension in 1926.

Smith was admitted to the Confederate Woman's Home in Austin on March 13, 1935. She died at the Home on July 20, 1936 and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.

She listed two nieces, a Mrs. H. Brevard and a Mrs. Herbert Terrell and one grandniece, a Mrs. Ray Modrall as contacts in her file materials.
