JONES, ELIZABETH ANNE SMITH (1928 ~ 2011)

 

Anne Smith Jones, age 83, of Temple, died Monday, April 25, 2011 at a local care center. Services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, April 29 at First United Methodist Church in Temple with Dr. Rodney Kruse and Rev. Tom Robbins officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 PM at Texas State Cemetery in Austin.

Elizabeth Anne Smith was born February 28, 1928 in Dallas. Her parents were Lura Mae Aldridge Smith of Plano and James Oscar Smith, Sr. of San Antonio. Anne graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas and attended Southern Methodist University during World War II. She married J. Grant Jones on August 21, 1948. They began their married life in Abilene but moved to Dallas where Grant traveled for Trezevent and Cochran and taught at Southern Methodist University. They later returned to Abilene when Grant went into the insurance business and began his long career in the Texas legislature. They moved to Temple later in life to be near their daughter, Janet Pliego.

Anne was a homemaker and civic volunteer during the time her children were home. She was active on the YMCA Board and was president of The Junior League of Abilene. They were longstanding members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church of Abilene where they sang in the choir. Anne was a member of the Senate Ladies Club in Austin during the time Grant served in the Texas State Senate. She owned, operated and thoroughly enjoyed the “Phoenix Collection”, a store showcasing an eclectic blend of fine eastern and western porcelains in Abilene. She enjoyed being an airplane pilot and global travel.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, James O. Smith, Jr. She is survived by her husband, her children Morgan A. Jones, a retired attorney and Janet Jones Pliego, M.D. and three grandchildren Jonathan J. Pliego, Morgan J. Pliego and Melia Caitlyn Jones.

Memorials may be made to either the Scott and White Children’s Hospital or Scott and White Hospice or the charity of your choice.
