MATTHEWS, C. C. (1843 ~ 1908). C.C. Matthews was born in Alabama in 1843. During the Civil War he belonged to Company K, 13th Mississippi Infantry, Barksdale's Brigade, Longstreet's Division. Company K was known as the "Spartan Band."

Company K originated around Sparta and Houston in Chickasaw County during April and May. The 13th saw their first action at Bull Run on July 21, 1861. Among other battles the 13th would fight in were Malvern Hill, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. Lee surrendered the 13th on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Matthews moved to Texas in 1869 and lived in Smith County where he was a member of the Baptist Church. He was a single farmer who suffered from wounds in his shoulders. He was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home on August 24, 1900 where he died June 26, 1908. He was later buried at the Texas State Cemetery.
