CHISM, AZOR O. (1838 ~ 1907). Confederate veteran Azor O. Chism was born in Alabama in 1838 where he worked as a farmer.

Chism joined the Confederate Army on March 26, 1862 and served briefly in Captain E.H. Vontress' Company of the Texas Cavalry. He enlisted in the army in Dallas, Texas, but no records indicate when or how Chism came to Texas.

The Vontress' Company of the Texas Cavalry was reformed as Company A. Morgan's Regiment, Texas Cavalry. Chism served in Morgan's Regiment for two years until he was discharged on October 30, 1863. It is likely that the unit served in Arkansas.

At an unspecified time, Chism moved to Tow Valley, Llano County, Texas where he lived until January 1, 1907. In January of 1907, Chism moved into the Confederate Men's Home in Austin, Texas. He died there on April 9, 1907.

No cause of death is known, but his listed disability was rheumatism. Confederate Home records maintain that Chism's brother, C.V. Chism, still lived in Tow Valley at the time of Azor's death.

He was buried at the Texas State Cemetery on the same day of his death.
