Arthur McMurtry

MCMURTRY, ARTHUR (1841 ~ 1908). Confederate veteran Arthur McMurtry was born in Texas in 1841.

During the Civil War he belonged to Company F, 26th Texas Cavalry, Debray's Brigade. The 26th was organized by augmentation of the 7th Texas Cavalry and was referred to as "The Menagerie." They fought in Texas and Louisiana along the Rio Grande and at the Red River Campaign. It was considered by many to be one of the finest regiments in the Confederate States Army.

After the War, McMurtry lived in Galveston, Galveston County where he was a member of the Episcopalian Church.

He was unmarried and was a bookkeeper before admittance to the Confederate Men's Home on March 29, 1904. He died there June 29, 1908 and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.
